Following a dairy-free diet can make it a challenge to eat enough calcium. This is especially important for children with growing bones. The great news is, that many milk alternatives are fortified with calcium.
Here are our dietitian’s tips for choosing dairy-free alternatives:
- When choosing a diary-free milk alternative, check the nutrition panel and choose a product with at least 120mg of calcium and 3g of protein per 100ml
- If you follow a vegan diet, look for a product with added vitamin B12
- Soy milk is a great dairy-free option for children 12 months and older as it is closest in protein and carbs to cow’s milk
- Some plant-based dairy alternatives are sweetened with added sugar, so check ingredient lists to find unsweetened varieties.
