Here are our dietitian’s tips for eating to manage diabetes:
- Choose whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, oats and grainy bread which have a lower glycaemic index (GI) than more refined carbohydrates
- Check labels on back of pack and avoid products which have added sugar in the ingredient list
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals to help stabilise your blood sugar levels across the day.
- Focus on reducing saturated fats and eating more healthy fats including nuts, seeds, avocado and extra virgin olive oil.
- Pair carbohydrate foods with protein or healthy fats to slow the absorption of glucose into your blood stream.
