One of the first questions that newly-diagnosed diabetics ask, is what do I eat? Eating to manage diabetes may feel like a challenge, and it can be helpful to visit an accredited practising or registered dietitian for an individualised nutrition plan to treat help manage your specific symptoms and reduce the risk of any associated complications.

Here are our dietitian’s tips for eating to manage diabetes:

  • Choose whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, oats and grainy bread which have a lower glycaemic index (GI) than more refined carbohydrates
  • Check labels on back of pack and avoid products which have added sugar in the ingredient list
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals to help stabilise your blood sugar levels across the day.
  • Focus on reducing saturated fats and eating more healthy fats including nuts, seeds, avocado and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Pair carbohydrate foods with protein or healthy fats to slow the absorption of glucose into your blood stream.
