Researchers have tested the theory that drinking beer after wine gives you more of a hangover than drinking wine before beer would.
The small study placed participants into three different groups – one drinking wine and then beer, the second drinking beer and then wine, and the third drinking only wine or beer.
The results were unsurprising. The best predictors of hangover severity were how drunk the participants felt and whether they vomited after drinking, rather than what they had been drinking or in what order. The Ministry of Health advises drinking no more than two standards drinks a day for women, no more than three for men, and no more than 10 or 15 per week, respectively.
There is, however, no risk-free alcohol intake.
