Fantastic non-plastic

A new edible packaging material for foods has been developed by a research team at the University of Otago’s food science department. The project aims to help solve the global environmental issue of plastic waste by making food packaging using by-products of corn and seafood industries and a water-soluble polymer commonly used in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. The project is at the ‘proof of concept’ stage, the next step is to investigate the toxicity of the films.
