A study that presented 20 adults with ultra-processed food for 14 days and unprocessed foods for 14 days found that on the ultra-processed diet, participants ate about 2100 kilojoules (500 calories) more per day. The diets had been matched for presented fat, calories, sugar, fibre and macronutrients, and participants were instructed to eat as much as they desired. The participants on the on the ultra-processed diet put on weight but lost weight on the unprocessed diet.
