With about one million biochemical reactions occurring every 60 seconds in the normal brain, the brain needs a good supply of nutrients to function properly. Memory impairment and psychological disorders can definitely have a basis in poor nutrition. On the other hand, good nutrition can prevent or slow deterioration of brain function in aging.
Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter produced by brain cells, is responsible for memory and learning. Alzheimer’s disease occurs when the brain cells that produce acetylcholine are destroyed. This is believed to be caused by oxidative damage to brain cells.
Brain Protex is a formula designed to supply nutrients to enhance the production of acetylcholine and antioxidants, which help to protect the brain from free radical damage and inflammation. Along with a good diet, exercise and avoiding environmental toxins, Brain Protex may help prevent deterioration of memory in the elderly. It may also slow the progress of diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia once they have begun.
The ingredients in this formula are:
Chinese Club Moss (Huperzia serrata)
This Chinese herb has a traditional history of use for treating memory loss, dementia and mental illness. Modern research has found a compound in the plant called huperzine A which inhibits the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, acetylcholinesterase. Inhibiting this enzyme increases acetylcholine in brain synapses.
Research suggests that huperzine-A may be helpful in Alzheimer’s disease. In one US study where 29 Alzheimer’s patients were given huperzine-A, more than half seemed to show improvement. Research in China suggests that 60 percent of people with Alzheimer’s disease show significant cognitive improvement when given huperzine-A. Other research suggests this alkaloid from the Chinese club moss may help protect brain cells from certain types of toxic chemicals. It can also be helpful for dementia and for improving memory function in general. So far the research has not shown any side effects. Brain Protex contains an extract of Chinese club moss standardized to 1% huperzine-A.
Ginkgo supports circulation throughout the body and particularly in the brain. It has been shown to enhance mental activity in the elderly, improving problems like dementia, depression, mental decline and disorientation. It tones and strengthens veins and arteries, improving oxygen flow to the brain. It also helps protect the brain from free radical damage. Research in Europe has shown that ginkgo has the ability to enhance mental function, and has proven helpful with difficulty in concentration, absent-mindedness, loss of memory, confusion and dizziness.
Lycopene and Alpha Lipoic Acid
Many age-related brain disorders are due to inflammation and free radical damage to the brain. Since the brain is mostly fat, antioxidants that prevent the oxidation of lipids can help protect the brain. As an antioxidant, lycopene is twice as effective as beta-carotene in protecting lipids from oxidative damage.
Alpha lipoic acid is another antioxidant. It readily crosses the blood brain barrier and is both fat- and water-soluble. It has been used to treat diabetic neuropathy in Germany and may help prevent toxins from damaging nerve tissues.
Soybean lecithin complex
This mixture contains phosphatidyl-serine, phosphatidyl -choline, phosphatidyl -ethanolamine and phosphatidyl –inositol, all of which are natural components of the cell’s phospholipid membrane. These phospholipids enhance cognitive functions like attention, short-term memory, telephone number recall, paragraph recall, reading concentration and name-face recognition.
Phosphatidylserine is the precursor for folate and for the amino acids glycine and cysteine. One of its major roles is to deactivate the enzyme that destroys acetylcholine. Choline is used to produce acetylcholine.
Ethanolamine is the second most abundant phospholipid found in cell membranes and is a component of lecithin. It falls into a class of antihistamines and so is sedating.
Inositol is a phospholipid involved in membrane structure. It is necessary for normal brain function and it plays a role in transmitting nerve signals.
Known as the “snow rose” to the residents of the Republic of Georgia, this herb is attributed to helping the people in the region have longer life spans than people living in other parts of the world. The secret of snow rose tea is that it is high in antioxidants called phenylpropanoids. This research shows that Rhododendron helps improve circulation to the brain. It reduces brain damage from chemical and biological causes and acts as a free radical scavenger.
Take 2 Brain-Protex capsules twice daily with meals.
