Eat More Often to Keep Your Metabolism Up

It’s true: the act of eating – in and of itself – actually burns calories. Digesting and absorbing food accounts for as much as 10 percent of your metabolic rate. If you’re trying to lose or maintain weight, here’s how to use this to your advantage:

1. EAT EVERY 3 TO 4 HOURS. Eating frequent meals keeps your body working throughout the day.

2. KEEP PORTION SIZES SMALL. If you’re eating frequently, of course, you’ll need to keep your overall daily calorie intake under control.

3. EAT BREAKFAST. It gets your metabolism up and running. If you make lunch your first meal of the day, you’ve missed out on an opportunity to stoke up your metabolism.

4. DON’T SKIP MEALS. Your metabolism can actually slow down, leaving you more prone to store fat by the time the day is through. When you eat frequently, you’re more likely to store energy as muscle.
